As I watched the NFL playoffs and listen to all the statistics, I came to a realization. Looking at how a team has done overall for the entire season can be insightful but how much a team has improved over the course of the season may be a better indication. It seems that teams that have made the playoffs have increased their capacity (they have learned and improved their abilities) which could reflect on coaches who know how to develop talent and bring the best out in players. If leaders focus on developing the talent of followers to increase their capacity to make them better, then as an organization you can compete at a higher level. For leaders it's not about just selecting the most talented people - it about increasing the capacity of people once they are part of the organization. So the next time you're looking at an organization with very talented people and wondering why they aren't excelling, consider that the leader is not focused on increased the capacity of people in the organization.
