Transitions

In the current environment of constant change with staff turnover, it is critical to consider how to transition from outgoing staff to incoming staff.  Here are some keep tips for a good transition:

List of key activities and projects.  Have an outgoing staff member create a chronological list of key activities and projects that happen throughout the year.  For an incoming staff member, this provides a framework for what to expect to work on and when.

Key job activities, contacts, projects, and tasks.  An outgoing staff member should provide a document that lists key job activities, tasks, projects, etc...  For incoming staff, this document provides context for how the job responsibilities are executed.

Key people.  Relationships are how work is accomplished.  Outgoing staff should identify key people that incoming staff needs to develop relationships with to fulfill their position responsibilities.

Establish Expectation.  Supervisors for incoming staff should be clear on expectations for incoming staff.  Identifying key issues that need attention by incoming staff is critical to allow them to start effectively in the position.  Incoming staff needs to meet with direct reports and provide expectations to them about how they will work with each other.

Questions.  Incoming staff and direct reports should set aside time to ask important questions.  Cultivating a foundation for how each will work with the other only happens with good communication.  Asking questions provides a structure for communication to happen.

Intentional efforts for an effective transition will create conditions for success for incoming staff.  What have you done to have an effective transition as you start a new job?

Trusting Environment

When there is not a trusting environment, people will lie, hide and fake it.  People will not take responsibility for mistakes.  They will not acknowledge mistakes and will hide them from others.  People will not disclose that don’t know what they are doing for fear of being ridiculed.  They are more concerned with being humiliated because others will find something wrong with their work.  Without a trusting environment people will fear breaking the rules instead of doing the right thing.  Without a trusting environment people will lose the will to work.

Connection

"We found that 39% of respondents feel the greatest sense of belonging when their colleagues check in with them, both personally and professionally. This was true across genders and age groups, with checking in being the most popular tactic for establishing a sense of belonging across all generations. By reaching out and acknowledging their employees on a personal level, companies and leaders can significantly enhance the employee experience by making their people feel valued and connected." https://lnkd.in/g_SbdXgz#employeeexperience
