As I listen to resolutions being made (and broken), one of the most interesting to me is the goal to have “balance in my life". This is often interpreted as needing to do less of something and more of another thing. By adding and subtracting, some how balance is achieved and life will be better. For me this is why the concept of balance is misunderstood.
First balance is not the goal. Balance is a means to achieve other goals. By working on balance one can excel at work or have a better personal life but balance is not the goal. Second balance is not a formula. It is not a matter of adding more or doing less. Balance is a process to help one refresh and refuel. Taking part in those activities that allow one to feel rejuvenated is what balance is designed to achieve. Therefore to achieve balance a person may need 10 minute or 10 days depending on the person. And finally balance is individualized. What one person does to have balance may not work for another person. And while one person may need hours to find balance another person may only need a few minutes.
So if you are looking for balance consider what you need to do to become refreshed to excel in your life.
