In recent years I have watched with joy and sadness as professional colleagues and friends have retired from the profession. They are people I have known for most of my professional life. They have provided leadership, guidance, insight and direction to me as I have navigated through my professional career. In several cases for me these colleagues were the models for what it meant to be a professional in higher education – they set the standards and created the roadmap for others to follow. As I look around the profession I wonder who will take their place as the standard setter. There seems to be a gap that needs to be filled. The question is who will fill that gap.
